The One Thing the Photo Cannot Answer: What Is This Steel Sitting In?

Now for the field no photograph can fill: the service environment. Standard pipe guidance is blunt about how much that decides, and it is worth reading as a filter rather than a statement about any one mill. Type 316 carries 2.0 to 3.0 percent molybdenum and 304 carries none, which is what blocks chloride pitting; the pitting resistance equivalent lands near 19 for 304 and near 25 for 316. The chloride gap is not subtle: 304 fails at roughly 300 ppm Cl- at 40 C, while 316 holds to around 1,000 ppm at the same temperature. The usual trigger to move up is chloride above about 50 ppm at ambient temperature, or above about 25 ppm once the line runs hotter than 50 C, or the presence of crevices at gaskets, threads and weld roots. So the first line of a serious inquiry names a medium and a temperature, not a supplier.

What happens when that condition is skipped is documented. But temper, the measure of hardness and mechanical treatment, decides how the material behaves in the shop and in service, and H14, H32 and T6 are not interchangeable. Choose wrong and the symptoms are physical: cracking during bending, excessive springback, a poor finish, fabrication that fights you for a week. Transfer that back to the frames you were scrolling: the sheet in the photo is flat, bright and unremarkable, and everything deciding whether it survives your forming line is a state you cannot see.

Surface is the second invisible variable. A published study on AISI 304 laser surface treatment from 2007 ran the alloy through different laser power densities, scan speeds, distances between paths and shielding media of air, argon and nitrogen, then examined the resulting microstructure and corrosion behavior. Three Checks Before the Name Goes on the List, and One Rule That Takes It Off

With those pieces in place, the order of operations is fixed. First, classification: decide which product family your part belongs to, whether flat roll, long products, BIOEDGE, joists and deck, recycled metals or processed copper, because that choice routes you to the right commercial team and the right documents. Second, specification: name the grade and the medium conditions together, since a grade without a service environment is an incomplete request. Third, commercial terms: weigh the cost premium and the delivery commitments against the rest of your bid list. A company that describes itself as producer, recycler and downstream fabricator at once is exactly the case where you classify first, because breadth across divisions is not a promise about your order.

Here is the rule that decides whether the name stays on the list. Keep it there while the service is neutral and indoor, chloride is absent, standard commodity grades cover the duty, and the schedule matters more than the chemistry. Start re-scoping the moment chloride climbs past roughly 50 ppm at ambient temperature or about 25 ppm above 50 C, when gaskets, threads or weld roots will hold stagnant liquid, or when coastal, marine or pharmaceutical duty enters the description. Pull it off entirely if you still cannot name the grade and the standard you want quoted, because at that point the conversation has not started and you are still reading pictures.
